Maltese encourages Suffolk to join NY in No-Sales Tax on Clothing
Presently; Suffolk County is still charging Sales Taxes on Clothing and Shoes of $110.00 or more. Maltese to circulate petition.
Maryann Maltese, is circulating a Petition to once again, get Suffolk County to join NYS's commitment of eliminating sales taxes on clothing and shoe purchases under $110.00.
With mass unemployment impacting Long Islanders and companies downsizing staff the need to understand that Suffolk County needs to join the band wagon and eliminate Suffolk's Sales Taxes on these purchases.
Several Counties have joined NYS and NYC's original pilot program eliminating the Sales Taxes on clothing items - but Suffolk County continues to lag behind. It's important for Suffolk County to not balance the budget on working families. There are many Small Retail Business establishments in the district and permanent elimination of Sales on Clothing items of $110.00 and under makes perfect sense.

Maryann worked on the Bill-Law Passage over a decade ago to eliminate Sales Taxes on Clothing and Shoe items under $1110.00. For a few Tax years; Suffolk County appeared to be providing Suffolk Residents with the elimination of these taxes during certain known big shopping weekends; including Labor Day Weekend and Martin Luther King's Birthday in January-but that exemption has subsequently not been implemented by Suffolk County.
This year; with Police Mandate Social Distancing Measures, and Families not earning funds as they normally would, Long Islanders are struggling trying to make ends meet and paying Highest Property Taxes in NYS. It seems right and just for Suffolk County to be required to join on board with NYS and offer Tax Free exemptions on clothing and shoe purchases under $110.00. I will introduce this bill in the NYS Legislature-in the NYS Assembly 12th AD-as I'm committed to ensuring that Working Families of Long Island can still remain here and cloth their children. It's also a proactive measure for the growing Senior Population on Long Island-that choose to remain on Long Island-some providing child care for their grandchildren or if they want to make a new clothing purchase for themselves. New Shoes-and winter gear; boots and coats are some of the most expensive items on one's wardrobe replacement and those items which may be under $110.00 purchasing them Sales Tax Free makes good common sense measures. If passed in NYS Assembly-12th AD-then Suffolk County would be required to provide the NYS Sales Exemption.
