May Moore First Graders Create Cards With Compassion

First graders in Christine Garcett’s class at Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School recently learned a lesson in kindness and “giving back” as they created handwritten letters and designed Valentine’s Day cards for senior citizens living at the Regal Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Queens.

After reading the award-winning Matt De La Pena and Christian Robinson book “Last Stop on Market Street,” which describes a grandmother and her grandson showing kindness to those in need, the students then found a meaningful way to be compassionate by creating the cards and letters for the nursing home residents. Garcett’s mother Kathleen, who lives in Regal Heights, visited the class during the lesson via Zoom and described what it’s like to live in a nursing home.

“The Regal Heights residents will absolutely love receiving these cards, and my students learned that giving is the most reliable way to feel happy,” Garcett said.
