Half Hollow Hills

Police are asking for the public's help in identifying and locating a man in connection with a theft at a Melville 7-Eleven. Police say the man entered the 7-Eleven, located at 22 Broadhollow Road, and stole eight packs of Newport 100 cigarettes and then ran out of the store on February 22 at 1:15 a.m. He fled the scene in a gray minivan.

Sachem Associate Superintendent Bruce Singer introduced an updated budget plan that would ask the public for an 8.05 percent tax increase in 2013-14 at Wednesday's Board of Education meeting held in the Samoset auditorium. That cuts in half the potential 16 percent increase the district would need to impose in order to operate a spending plan identical to this year.

West Islip

The driver who police claim caused a deadly multi-vehicle crash that took the life of a West Islip man in Sayville in early January is due back in court on April 10.

Thomas Herman, 46, of Patchogue, has been held in Suffolk County Jail on $300,000 bond since he was arrested on January 14 and charged with driving under the influence of drugs and leaving the scene of an accident.

Patchogue

Brookhaven officials broadcast a loud and clear message to Verizon on Thursday: they want FiOS in the township. Supervisor Ed Romaine was joined by town board members and representatives of the Communication Workers of America Thursday outside Verizon Communication's headquarters in Patchogue to urge the company to make FiOS available to Brookhaven residents.

Medford

Quite a few of the more than 150 animals rescued Tuesday from an overrun Medford home require long-term veterinary care, says the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in a release that went out Wednesday.

The SPCA is requesting donations to help provide this care, which those interested can provide using this Paypal link.

Sayville-Bayport

Police are investigating a report that a white man, driving a white van, attempted to lure a young Sayville youth into his van Saturday morning on Lincoln Avenue in Sayville.

A boy told his father that the man said he had candy in the van and asked if he wanted some. The incident took place about 11:15 a.m. and police canvassed the area after the boy's father made a report.

Babylon Village

Babylon Village residents upset with their noisy next-door neighbors came out to a public hearing held at Babylon Village Hall last week, listing their complaints against events held and guests at the Long Island Yacht Club in the past few years.

Residents listed continuous noise from party guests going well past 1 a.m., yachts docked overnight with guests on-board and lack of action taken by the yacht club as their major complaints to the board.
