North Babylon Schools Remember 9/11

Robert Moses Middle School unveils its student-made 9/11 Memorial.

North Babylon’s Robert Moses Middle School hosted a dedication ceremony where they unveiled their 9/11 Memorial to the public on September 11th.

The memorial was created by members of the school's art club, with assistance from club advisor Joyce Orrigo. The two six-foot structures are decorated with ceramic and glass mosaic tiles spelling out the Jimi Hendrix quote, “When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.”

During the unveiling ceremony, social studies teacher Dale Walden, who came up with the idea of the memorial and worked with Ms. Orrigo on the concept, spoke to the crowd.

“I wanted our students to create a living memorial to all of those who passed on that terrible day," he said. "It was a learning experience for the students, not just an art experience, as many of the students were not around when this tragedy occurred."

“It is remarkable to see the students of North Babylon – who were so young that day – dedicate their time to remembering and honoring those who lost their lives and those who survived,” remarked North Babylon Superintendent Patricia Godek.

Following the speeches, the select chorus performed two musical numbers, the memorial towers were unveiled and doves were released.
