North Babylon Students Donate 1,500 Food Items To Local Pantry

NORTH BABYLON, NY - Part of Phelps Lane in North Babylon was blocked off on Nov. 1, as grades K-5 students from William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School formed a human food chain across the road to pass along donated food items to St. Paul’s Reformed Church’s food pantry.

This was the result of a month-long food drive hosted at the school, where students competed throughout the month of October to see which class would be the top contributor.

The school raised a total of 1,500 items of food for St. Paul’s food pantry, which feeds between 350-500 local families a month.

“DeLuca’s Human Food Chain is one of our favorite traditions,” DeLuca Principal Vincent Fantauzzi said. “It is a great way for our students to be directly involved in giving back to those members of our local community that are in need.”

After the food was passed along to the pantry, fourth- and fifth-grade Student Council representatives helped stock and organize the donations into the pantry shelves.

In addition to the school’s contribution to St. Paul’s food pantry, the school also contributes to the district’s North Babylon Bulldog Cupboard through its seasonal donations from the student-run organic garden.
