North Babylon Students Study Native American Culture

Fourth-graders at Belmont Elementary School visited Marion G. Vedder Elementary School to join its fourth-graders in participating in daylong workshops about Native American culture.

The North Babylon students were visited by Native American speaker Uaian Arawak Taino and took part in hands-on activities featuring artifacts. A hut was set up for children to walk through. Students also studied different animal furs, traditional drums and other items representing Native American Culture.

Uaian Arawak Taino sang a traditional song, spoke about different ways of life and told students “the most effective ways to teach the culture are to play games and sports, tell stories and to show arts and crafts.”
