North Babylon Troop 399's 65th Eagle Scout

Samuel Ahrens of West Islip, NY has earned the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America, Eagle Scout.

Sam’s scouting career began when he joined Cub scouts Pack 279 in 2nd grade because he wanted to learn archery. He has proudly served as Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Librarian, Scribe, Order of the Arrow Representative, Leave No Trace Trainer, Chaplains Aide, Troop Guide, Instructor and Bugler for his troop. He was very involved with the Order of the Arrow and has held a position for three of his years there as Secretary, Vice Chief and a Ceremony coordinator. He has also earned the Sagtikos District Service Award for his commitment to scouting.

Becoming an Eagle Scout is achieved through hard work, with the recipient required to have earned at least 21 merit badges, demonstrate leadership and have a positive impact on society. Scouts are required to complete a project that benefits their community before ascending into the ranks of Eagle Scout.

Sam completed his Eagle Scout Project on May 23, 2020. His project was to build a bench for an Eastern Suffolk Boces school building. This would create a safe space for students to cool down, if the classroom setting got too intense or create a meeting area for students in order to build a greater sense of community. Fundraising for his project was done through a company called Savers which donates twenty cents per pound of clothing, to his cause.

Troop 399 is a Boy Scout Troop based in North Babylon, NY and a member of the Sagtikos District of BSA’s Suffolk County Council. It is sponsored by the North Babylon Lions Club. Originally chartered in 1975, Troop 399 has been serving the community, turning boys into leaders and giving families the opportunity to participate in Scouting for 40 years.
