Second Graders Studying Brain Functions

Second Graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park enjoyed fun hands-on activities surrounding their brain functionality.

At Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park, second grade teacher and Student Council Co-Moderator, Ms. Bravo, gives her second graders so much more to wrap their brains around than reading, writing and ‘rithmetic in their typical week. This week in science, SSCM second graders were learning all about how their bodies work. They had the most fun with the hands-on activities, such as seeing their brain functionality in action.

Working in pairs, students did tests using gravity and examining how their nerves sent messages from their eyes to their brains to their hands to do something as simple as catching a falling ruler. Watching to see if their partners could catch the ruler between their thumb and forefinger gave them an understanding of reaction time and the nervous system.

Those who work with young children have the unique opportunity to facilitate powerful learning experiences and inspire deeper investigations that will validate and empower children to learn. Hands-on science activities like this one are essential components of any school setting and they help lay the foundation for life-long learning and healthy development.Yeah, Science!
