Police ID Pair Seriously Hurt in LIE Crash

A car flipped over and landed upside down on the guardrail, police say.

Police have identified the two people who were seriously injured in a crash on the Long Island Expressway Saturday morning.

According to police, 44-year-old Luis Espinali and 42-year-old Jose Paulino were traveling in a 2004 Nissan eastbound on the LIE in the center lane when their vehicle was struck from behind by a 2003 Lincoln between the Sagtikos Parkway and Wicks Road in Brentwood.

The Nissan lost control and flipped over, landing upside down on the guardrail on the right side of the roadway, police said.

Espinali, of Coram, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip via Brentwood Legion Ambulance for treatment of serious injuries. Paulino, of Central Islip, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital via Suffolk County Police helicopter.

The driver of the Lincoln, 28-year-old Fausto Narvaez, of Shirley, was not injured. No criminal charges will be filed, police said.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks and the investigation is continuing. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call Fourth Squad detectives at 631-854-8452.
