Snow, Freezing Rain Could Cause 'Significant Travel Problems'

Snowfall estimates rise as hazardous weather outlook goes back into effect.

Long Island is back under a hazardous weather outlook, with snow and freezing rain set to impact the Monday commutes, according to the National Weather Service.

“A long duration winter weather event is likely from late Sunday into late Monday night,” the NWS said in the hazardous weather outlook. At this time it appears the region could have freezing rain along with minor snow accumulations that would cause significant travel problems.”

The latest snowfall total forecast map for Long Island calls for 2-3 inches of snow to fall through Monday night across most of the island. Parts of the extreme South Shore may see 1-2 inches of snow accumulation, the NWS says.

Ice is also expected to cause issues on the roadways. Some areas of the island could see more than two-tenths of an inch of ice accumulation, the NWS says.

  • Sunday- A chance of rain and snow before noon, then a chance of rain between noon and 3pm, then a chance of rain and snow after 3pm. Cloudy, with a high near 36. Wind chill values between 25 and 30. Light east wind increasing to 6 to 11 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
  • Sunday Night- A chance of rain, snow, and freezing rain before midnight, then snow and freezing rain. Low around 30. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. Northeast wind 9 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
  • Monday- Snow and freezing rain before 9am, then rain and snow. High near 33. Northeast wind 15 to 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.
  • Monday Night- Snow and freezing rain likely, mainly before midnight. Cloudy, with a low around 26. Blustery. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
  • Tuesday- Partly sunny, with a high near 35.
