Spare Change Changing Lives with Lenten Rice Bowls
Students at Deer Park's SSCM School give big each year to those in need.
Every year during Lent, Pre-K through 8th grade students at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park participate in the Lenten Rice Bowls program, sponsored by Catholic Relief Services.
Middle School Community Helpers distribute cardboard “Rice Bowls” to the student body, offering them a wonderful opportunity to practice their Christian Lenten responsibility of giving alms to those in need. Students collect spare change from parents and family and give of their own allowance or earnings. The money collected is sent to Catholic Relief Services, where funding is used to feed, clothe and shelter those in need around the world.
SSCM students give big every year, of their own, and there’s no doubt about it, their giving changes lives throughout the world. If a student donates $1.00 a day during the 40 days of Lent, that $40.00 will provide one month of food for a family, two years worth of seeds for a farmer and three months of clean water for four families.
As we come to the end of the Easter season, perhaps the generosity of children is a good reminder that Lent is not the only time when giving means the world to those in need.
