Street Renamed For NYPD Officer, Father of 5, Killed by Drunken Driver

Earl Street in North Babylon is renamed "Police Officer Andre Menzies Street."

NYPD Officer Andre Menzies, a North Babylon father of five who was killed by a drunken driver in 2010, will be forever remembered by his community as the street where he lived is renamed in his honor.

Earl Street between Bay Shore Road and Noble Street was renamed “Police Officer Andre Menzies Street” on Saturday, July 14. Menzies’ family joined Babylon town officials and Suffolk Legis. Lou D’Amaro (D-North Babylon) in a ceremony to remember the officer who spent nine years serving as one of New York’s Finest before his life was tragically cut short, leaving his five children without their father.

Menzies was returning home from work in November 2010 when Michael Bowen who was driving east in the westbound lanes of the Northern State Parkway, slammed into his car, just east of the exit for Wolf Hill Road in Dix Hills.

New York State troopers received a report of a wrong-way motorist on the parkway but couldn't track down Bowen before tragedy struck, Tom Magno, First Assistant Chief of the Dix Hills Fire Department, told the New York Post at the time of the crash.

Bowen, flunked a field sobriety test and was busted for driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. He pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide and other charges related to the head-on collision in May.
