Teamwork, Problem-Solving and Science at SSCM

Eighth graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park work together to problem-solve and get their science in gear

Eighth graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park worked in teams to solve the question: “How do fluids exert pressure?” Student teams were given simple materials such as cotton balls, towels, tape, styrofoam donuts, sheets of plastic, popsicle sticks, cotton swabs and a tarp. They were then tasked with working together to design and construct a carrier that would prevent an egg from breaking when dropped from a pre-determined height. The carrier needed to withstand numerous drops and students could only use the materials provided to complete their projects.

Each of the teams did a fantastic job of creating unique and effective carriers for their eggs. Moreover, they had a ton of fun and showcased their “egg-cellent” teamwork skills, all while soaking in valuable lessons on the concepts of momentum, force and energy. Four of the five teams were successful in completing repeated egg drops with no breakage and all seemed to enjoy the scientific process. Go, Science!
