Two Babylon Sears Locations Closing

The hardware store will close by May, leaving a big anchor slot open on Deer Park Avenue.

The Sears Appliances and Hardware store on the corner of Deer Park Avenue and Bay Shore Road in North Babylon is closing.

Sears is shutting down underperforming stores, including another , a company official said. 

Kimberly Freely, a spokeswoman for Sears, told Lindenhurst Patch that store employees were told of the closings in February. She added that "the majority of the employees are part-time. Those who qualify will receive severance, and associates will be notified of open positions at other nearby Sears and Kmart locations."

Sears Hardware locations remain open in Patchogue, Port Jefferson and Lake Ronkonkoma.

In this area, Sears faced a losing battle against the ever-present Home Depot chain. Home Depot has a Deer Park store on Commack Road, near Tanger Outlets. It has a second store up the road in Commack. Sears also had to compete for customers with Lowe's on Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore.

Finally, also continues to operate on Deer Park Avenue in North Babylon. That store has been in business since 1956.

The shopping mall that includes Sears in North Babylon also has a Mama Sbarro's pizzeria, and a Salpino, which is an Italian specialty store.
