Engineers presented to the students on the wide variety of engineering specializations the FAA employs, including environmental engineers, electrical and electronic engineers, structural engineers, and more.
Students learned the types of projects and programs FAA engineers participate in and some of the cutting-edge technologies they utilize to successfully bring their projects to completion. The engineers also demonstrated for students the process of how parts and pieces of aviation materials and programs are designed and engineered. Following, the engineers tasked the students with designing a paper tube that would freefall slowly to the floor and land on a target. With the engineers guiding the students through iterations and alterations in order to properly analyze their results and determine future modifications to their tube designs.

“Overall, it was an enriching experience that demonstrated an authentic and abundant love for the discipline of engineering,” said David Milch, technology and science teacher. “It was easy to assess that numerous students became even more interested in entering the field of engineering.”
After the interactive demonstration, each of the engineers shared their educational journeys with the students. This was especially notable when two presenters indicated that they had lived in Wyandanch. The engineers also provided insight into what college courses to take, careers paths and scholarships available. The types of employment opportunities and corresponding salaries were topics discussed as well as gender considerations in a traditionally male dominated field.
