(Uniondale, NY—August 31, 2018)—Nearly 400 area school children will head to school in style this September, thanks to the generosity of PSEG Long Island employees. Throughout the summer, employees in all of PSEG Long Island’s offices were encouraged to donate school supplies to the volunteer-based PSEG Long Island Employee Outreach Council’s (EOC) annual school supply drive.

Thousands of boxes of crayons, pencils and pens, notebooks and binders, rulers, scissors, and other goodies were collected and packed by two dozen employee volunteers.

The various back-to-school items were loaded into backpacks and distributed by PSEG Long Island employee volunteers to a variety of grassroots agencies and organizations across Long Island and the Rockaways for area school children.

“I am continuously amazed by the generosity and thoughtfulness of our employees,” said Nancy Campo, president of PSEG Long Island’s Employee Outreach Council. “Every year we put the call out and every year, they come through with generous donations for our area school kids and a willingness to pitch in and get the job done.”

The backpacks were swiftly scooped up and dropped off at local food pantries, outreach centers and other organizations that help children and families, including the Wyandanch Community Resource Center.

According to the annual Backpack Index, prepared by Ohio-based Huntington Bank and the national Communities in Schools dropout prevention program, the cost of school supplies can have a significant impact on parents, especially those struggling to make ends meet. In 2018, supplies are estimated to cost:

  • $637 for elementary school children
  • $941 for middle school children
  • $1,355 for high school students
