BBQ Attendee Shoots Man 6 Times For Calling Him 'Son,' DA Says

Fred Richardson became outraged when another guest at the cookout wouldn't help him get a gun, so he shot him in the back, prosecutors said.

FLATBUSH, BROOKLYN — Be careful who you call "son."

A Flatbush man, outraged at having been called what he felt was a disrespectful moniker, tried to assassinate another man at a Brooklyn barbecue, prosecutors said.

Fred Richardson, 46, will spend up to 15 years in prison for shooting a 42-year-old man six times at a Chauncey Street barbecue shortly before midnight on July 2, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office announced Thursday.

Richardson and his soon-to-be victim began arguing at the Bed-Stuy barbecue when Richardson asked where he could get a gun and the man replied that he couldn’t help, then called him “son,” said prosecutors.

Being called “son” upset Richardson, so he left the cookout, found a gun without the other man’s assistance, came back and shot him three times in the back, prosecutors said.

The 42-year-old fell to the ground, Richardson shot him twice in the stomach, once in the arm then ran away, said prosecutors.

Emergency responders rushed to the barbecue and transported Richardson’s victim to Kings County Hospital where he was successfully treated for life-threatening injuries, prosecutors said.

Richardson was arrested about one month later, on Aug. 4, after he was identified from a photo lineup, prosecutors said.

Richardson, of Flatbush, was sentenced in Brooklyn Criminal Court after a jury found him guilty of attempted murder in April, prosecutors said.
