Flatbush Fire: 2 Jump From Burning Brooklyn Building
One hit an awning; the other fell onto a mattress.

Update: The man who jumped onto the mattress has died. He is reported to be a father of three.
When an apartment fire broke out above a sporting apparel shop on Nostrand Avenue in Flatbush just before 2 a.m. this morning, neighbors watched as two of the building’s residents flung themselves from third-story windows.
The jumpers were two of six people injured in the fire.

“Witnesses tell me that two of the people who were hurt actually had to jump from this building — one of them landing on the ground, and the other one landing on this awning,” a reporter with News 12 Brooklyn said from the cordoned-off scene after the fire.
The other landed on a mattress on the sidewalk — now splattered with blood.

Witnesses also told TV news that they’d heard ”screams and people yelling for those who were trapped to jump.”
The New York Fire Department tells Patch that the cause of the fire is still under investigation. All six fire victims were whisked away by ambulance; one is now reportedly in critical condition at Staten Island University Hospital.
