2 Elderly Residents Killed in East Flatbush Fire: UPDATE

Neighbors helped save two other building residents, but couldn't get to Lord and Octavia Kinard in time. The building had no smoke alarms.

A fatal fire in Brooklyn claimed the lives of elderly residents Lord Kinard, 76, and Octavia Kinard, 71, and injured five others early Saturday morning.

According to the FDNY, the fire at 49th Street and Church Avenue in East Flatbush was accidental and originated at a power strip in the dining room on the building’s first floor.

The FDNY said there was no working smoke alarm in the building.

CBS2 reported that firefighters found the lifeless bodies of Lord and Octavia Kinard “inside separate bedrooms” upstairs.

Saturday morning’s blaze injured building residents Carrie Kinard, 49, who suffered smoke inhalation, and Lord O’ Justin Kinard, 19, who was burned, according to CBS2.

Also injured were two firefighters and a neighbor who reportedly suffered smoke inhalation and injured his leg while trying to help.

The fire burned through the building from around 5:45 a.m. until around 6:15 a.m.

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams reportedly called the fire a ”wake-up call” for all Brooklyn residents. He spent Sunday morning handing out free smoke detectors in East Flatbush.
