Hillary Clinton Takes Ill, Leaves 9/11 Ceremony After Feeling 'Overheated,' Cancels West Coast Visit

In a statement, Hillary Clinton's doctor said the Democratic nominee was diagnosed with pneumonia on Friday.

Update: Hillary Clinton has cancelled plans to visit the West Coast on Monday and Tuesday after she abruptly left the 9/11 ceremony in Manhattan when she became overheated, The Associated Press reported. Clinton's doctor later said the nominee was diagnosed with pneumonia on Friday.

MANHATTAN, NY — Hillary Clinton took ill Sunday and left New York City's 9/11 ceremony early after she felt overheated, campaign spokesman Nick Merrill said in a statement. Her doctor later said the candidate had been diagnosed Friday with pneumonia and was dehydrated Sunday morning.

Clinton attended the ceremony for an hour and 30 minutes, according to her campaign. She left the ceremony to go to her daughter Chelsea Clinton's apartment in the Flatiron neighborhood of Manhattan.

The statement from her campaign said she was feeling much better.

A video on Twitter appears to show Clinton stumbling as she's assisted into a Secret Service vehicle when she leaves the ceremony. The authenticity of the video could not be verified, but it shows several agents surrounding a woman purported to be Clinton, and the vehicle appears to be the same one she climbed into when she later left her daughter's apartment.

Just before noon, Clinton was seen leaving her daughter's apartment and went to her home in Chappaqua.

"I'm feeling great, it's a beautiful day in New York," she said as she exited the apartment building.

She also posed for a picture with a young girl who ran up to her.

Clinton's doctor, Dr. Lisa R. Bardack, issued a statement after examining her saying she was diagnosed with pneumonia on Friday.

"Secretary Clinton has been experiencing a cough related to allergies. On Friday, during follow up evaluation of her prolonged cough, she was diagnosed with pneumonia. She was put on antibiotics, and advised to rest and modify her schedule. While at this morning's event, she became overheated and dehydrated. I have just examined her and she is now re-hydrated and recovering nicely," Bardack said.

Earlier, reporters with The Associated Press and CBS News tweeted that Clinton had left the area and that pool reporters following her campaign were not being told of her whereabouts.

It was unclear when she had been scheduled to leave the ceremony. Her campaign website shows no other official events scheduled for the day. Temperatures at the event were in the mid 80s.

Republican nominee Donald Trump was also seen leaving the ceremony.

The episode is sure to fuel reports, almost exclusively from partisan, right-wing websites, that Clinton has been suffering from some undisclosed medical condition. Clinton has released medical records that include results of blood tests and an assessment from her doctor that she is fit to run the country; Trump has released a note from his doctor saying that the candidate is healthy.

Clinton has maintained a schedule far busier than that portrayed by Trump, who has said she's regularly been forced off the campaign schedule to "nap," and, in typically unsupported statements, has maintained she is physically unfit for the White House.

Clinton had four campaign stops scheduled for Monday in four different cities, according to her public schedule.

The ceremony, marking the 15th anniversary of the attacks, was scheduled to begin at 8:40 a.m. and end around 12:30 p.m.
