Melissa Mark-Viverito To Speak On Sanctuary City Panel

The Urban Justice Center is hosting a panel discussion on Monday about what it means for New York City to be a "sanctuary city."

FINANCIAL DISTRICT, NY — NYC Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito will speak on a panel Monday evening about what it means for New York City to be a "sanctuary city" during the Trump administration.

Mark-Viverito will be joined by Ravi Ragbir, an organizer of the New Sanctuary Coalition, and Lourdes Rosado, the civil rights bureau chief in the state attorney general's office. The discussion, organized by the Urban Justice Center, will focus on the city's responsibilities as a sanctuary city.

NYC is one of hundreds of so-called "sanctuary" cities and counties in the country. In general, government officials in these jurisdictions prohibit local law enforcement from working with federal immigration officers to deport undocumented immigrants, unless they have been charged with serious crimes. At least 39 cities and 364 counties in the U.S. consider themselves "sanctuaries," according to the Immigrant Legal Resource Center.
