Snow is expected to fall at a rate of 2 to 3 inches per hour, according to weather officials.

“These conditions have the potential to imperil the health, safety and welfare of the residents of the Town of Islip," Carpenter said. "I’m urging everyone to stay safe and stay indoors. Shoveling heavy snow can be life threatening. If you’re not accustomed to it, don’t do it. Wait for someone else to offer assistance. If you have an elderly or homebound neighbor, I would ask that you check on them when it’s safe to step outside."

The Town’s Department of Public Works and Parks have been out salting all intersections, hills, school routes, and emergency routes since early Wednesday morning.

Once there’s an accumulation, the Town’s snow removal personnel will begin their snow plowing operation.

During a state of emergency, residents are required to move parked cars off the road and onto a driveway or lawn, so that crews can effectively and efficiently plow.

Parked cars left on the road can be ticketed.

The Town’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC), has been activated since 9 a.m. on Wednesday and is staffed with Emergency Management personnel.

Public Safety continues to collaborate with Suffolk County Emergency Management officials and PSEGLI throughout the day, and will continue until the storm passes through the region.

“We are fortunate that most of the anticipated accumulation will take place during the overnight hours, which will allow our crews to move through our streets with fewer cars on the road,” Tom Owens, Commissioner, Town of Islip DPW/Parks said.
