Amagansett Schoolhouse To Be Donated To Local School District

The schoolhouse, built in 1802 by Samuel Schellinger, will be relocated to the present-day school grounds on Montauk Highway

An Amagansett schoolhouse currently in the Atlantic Avenue property of Huntington and Adelaide Sheldon, will be donated to the Amagansett School District and moved to the present-day school grounds on Montauk Highway.

According to the East Hampton Star, the schoolhouse was built by Samuel Schellinger in 1802 and is thought to be the oldest on eastern Long Island.

The schoolhouse was originally located opposite today’s school building on “Amagansett Street,” now Montauk Highway and was moved several times, East Hampton Star reports.

The relocation will require a State Environmental Quality Review Act assessment and approval by the New York State Education Department before the one-room schoolhouse can be moved to the front of the school, near the playground and shrubbery according to the East Hampton Star.

“We’re very excited about the possibility of having it reside here,” Ms. Tritt told the East Hampton Star, “for the historic value to our community.”
