Dead Dolphin Washes Up In Montauk

The dolphin was male; a cause of death is unknown, experts say.

MONTAUK, NY —A deceased dolphin washed up on the Montauk coast Friday, the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society said.

AMCS said they received a call from East Hampton Town Police about a deceased common dolphin that washed up 50 yards west of South Eton Street beach access on the ocean side.

The dolphin was male, approximately 120 lbs., and 6' in length, AMCS said.

AMCS biologists and volunteers conducted a necropsy from 12 to 2:30 p.m. on Friday and said that dolphin appeared to have been eating, with fish and squid found in the stomach, as well as some parasites.

Currently, a cause of death is unknown, AMCS said.

Samples were sent to a pathologist to determine a cause of death; results may take several weeks to months, AMCS said

Remains were disposed of at the Montauk Recycling Center.

The dolphin was found after 2 bottlenose dolphins were found deceased in Amagansett last week.

Strandings of alive and deceased marine mammals and sea turtles should be reported to the NYS Stranding Hotline at 631-369-9829.
