East Hampton Residents Criticize Proposed Rental Registry Law
Should East Hampton Town pass the rental registry law?

Residents expressed their criticism against the board’s proposed rental registry law during first of two public work sessions on Tuesday, 27east reports.
Homeowners who rent their home said they opposed the law, which if approved would require rental property owners to register with the town’s Building Department and obtain a rental registration number, because they consider it an infringement on their constitutional rights.
The purpose of the law is to decrease the excessive turnover from illegal short-term rentals across the town, but residents stated the town already has laws to deal with both overcrowding and excessive turnover, according to 27east.

The law would also require owners to pay an application fee and fill out a form and would require owners to register a property by: filling out a form and providing an affidavit about the number of people renting the property, information on the property, the duration of rental, and if there is a valid certificate of occupancy, according to 27east.
“This draconian measure will not only be burdensome but will result in unintended consequences to the community,” said resident Beverly Bond according to 27east. “This is a frightening overreach by the board. I feel this is all a charade.”
