East Hampton Town Presents "Recycling Awareness Month"

The town will be hosting several different events and challenges during the month of October in honor of "Recycling Awareness Month"

The East Hampton Recycling and Litter Committee (EHRLC), in conjunction with the East Hampton Sanitation and Highway Departments presents “Recycling Awareness Month”, which was approved unanimously by the Town Board to be held each year in October.

The town will be celebrating the month in several different ways.

The goal of this designation is to raise awareness about the benefits of recycling and to encourage residents, businesses, and schools to increase their rates of recycling in order to benefit the environment and generate revenue through the sale of recyclables.

For the month of October, Recycling Graveyard will be set up at Town Hall, located at 159 Pantigo Place. Residents are encouraged to visit, and to come up with epitaphs for graveyard expansion efforts.

In addition, throughout the month, the EHRLC requests submissions of recycling, reusing, and repurposing tips and ideas. Tips and photos can be sent via email to the committee chair, Deb Klughers: Keepinitgreen@optonline.net.

The EHRLC is also challenging all residents to “Go Strawless” and is asking all businesses to change from plastic stirrers and straws, to those made from wood, paper, or other biodegradable materials. Many delis around town have already switched from plastic to wooden stirrers, such as Barnes Country Store and the Springs General Store. All businesses who currently use wooden stirrers or paper straws are asked to send a note to the EHRLC, and all who switch are asked to send a note as well. These businesses will be highlighted on the Town webpage.

The EHRLC and EH Town Sanitation Department will also be asking all schools throughout East Hampton Town to participate in the “Kids Can Recycle Contest”. Schools are asked to collect clean aluminum cans (not tin or metal) in bags provided by the Town, and the school with the most cans (by weight) collected will win a prize and an evergreen tree with a small plaque, congratulating their efforts for participating in the first East Hampton Recycling Awareness Month. (The town is seeking a donation of this prize, and any others prizes that we can offer to the children for their involvement!)
