Man's Toes Amputated After East Hampton Train Accident: Cops

The "highly intoxicated" man was hit by an eastbound Long Island Rail Road train Saturday, police say.

EAST HAMPTON, NY — A man's toes were amputated after he was struck by an eastbound Long Island Rail Road train Saturday in East Hampton, police said.

According to East Hampton Village Police, the accident took place on North Main Street at 2:41 p.m.

Two men were at the scene of the accident; the first man, 46, who was "highly intoxicated," was struck by an eastbound MTA Long Island Rail Road train and two toes were severed, police said.

An East Hampton Village Police officer controlled the bleeding, police said.

The second man, 39, also "highly intoxicated," did not appear to have been hit by the train, police said; he was transported by the East Hampton Village Ambulance Association to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, police said.

The first injured man was taken by the East Hampton Village Ambulance Association to the airport and was then airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said.

MTA Police were notified and responded; the scene was turned over to MTA authorities, police said.

Police did not identify the two men involved in the accident.

MTA LIRR press representatives did not immediately return a request for comment.

According to the Long Island Rail Road's Tweet, the 3:30 p.m. Montauk train due at Jamaica at 6:10 p.m was "cancelled due to an unauthorized person on the tracks being struck by a train near East Hampton."

Correction: A conflicting police report said the man's foot was severed but MTA police confirmed that two of the man's toes were amputated.
