October is Adopt-A-Dog Month!

On behalf of the Ad Council and The Shelter Pet Project (a collaborative effort between The Humane Society and Maddie’s Fund) we’d like to announce that October is “Adopt-A-Dog” Month.

Each year approximately 3-4 million pets are adopted. 29% of dogs and 33% of cats are adopted from animal shelters and rescue each year, but the number of healthy and treatable pets losing their lives for lack of a home is now 2.7 million.

Bringing that number all the way to zero is the mission of “The Shelter Pet Project.” 17 million people will acquire a pet within the next year. The goal is to make shelters the first place these potential adopters turn when looking to get a new pet, ensuring that all healthy and treatable pets find loving homes.

Here are a few simple ways to help:

· Visit www.theshelterpetproject.org, where one can search for a pet from a local shelter or rescue group, read adoption success stories and learn valuable information about pet adoption.
