Repair Work On Montauk Highway In East Hampton Begins

The DOT announced yesterday the project to repair and repave 15 miles of Montauk Highway between NY Route 114 and S. Etna Ave. has begun

The New York State Department of Transportation announced Wednesday that the project to repair and repave 15 miles of Montauk Highway between NY Route 114 in East Hampton to South Etna Avenue in Montauk has begun.

The project involved needed road repairs and cleaning and repairing drainage systems.

Lane shifts on shorter sections of Montauk Highway will be utilized rather than lane closures, and single travel lane in each direction will remain open to motorists to minimize impact on residents, businesses and motorists.

However, single lane alternating direction traffic operations will be in effect, where eastbound drivers are stopped while westbound drivers proceed then vice versa. Night work will take place primarily at busy intersections and down town areas to ease the inconvenience of repaving operations. Local officials, businesses, and emergency service providers will be notified about the repaving project.

The off-peak daytime travel lane shifts will be in effect Monday through Friday, between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day, weather permitting, beginning Monday, Oct. 20.

The top layer of the worn, distressed pavement throughout the project area will be removed then replaced with new asphalt and fresh pavement markings including bike lane striping and more visible pedestrian crosswalks. When completed, these pavement repairs will improve motorists’ safety and help maintain the integrity of Montauk Highway in the Hamptons, according to the DOT website.

A 3.5 mile section of Montauk Highway between Methodist Lane and Old Montauk Highway was identified as the priority repaving location. Since this section includes the Amagansett Shopping area, the DOT is seeking feedback from Amagansett store owners regarding a switch from night construction through this 1500 foot section, to off-peak day time roadwork.

In this district, paving operations would be scheduled between Tuesdays and Thursdays and would take five days to complete, though not necessarily consecutively. On-street parking would be prohibited but access to side-streets and off-street parking would be maintained.

Business owners in the Amagansett shopping area are encouraged to call NYSDOT Engineer-in-Charge at 631-204-5720 to express an opinion prior to Monday, Oct. 6.
