Sailing Season Just Getting Better
As the waters are warming up so is the fun out on Gardiner's Bay!
The winds are becoming more manageable as the waters are warming up. So the east end 2015 sailing season is now slowly reaching its usual summer epic stage. Gardiner’s Bay with it’s historic vista’s is such a sweet place to take a nice day or sunset sail. To think that during the American Revolution over 100 British warships where stationed all over the bay still boggles my mind. In fact General Benedict Arnold, the famed traitor, patrolled the waters for the British after he switched sides.
After the British navy made yet another tour of arms visit to Gardiner’s Bay during the War of 1812, even lobbing a few cannon shots into Sag Harbor Village, the United States Government commissioned what became known as Fort Tyler at the the western Tip of Gardiner’s Island to prevent any foreign ships ever to enter again. Fort Tyler became a practice target run for military bombing training for World War II and now is referred to as the ruins! It’s a fun destination for a day sail as are the four lighthouses: Bug Lighthouse(located between Shelter Island and Orient Park), Plum Gut Orient Lighthouse (between Plum Island and Orient Point), Cedar Island Lighthouse (located on Cedar Point between East Hampton and Shelter Island and my favorite Great Gull Island Lighthouse nestled between Block Island Sound, Gardiner’s Bay and Long Island Sound. These truly are all perfect for day sail destinations.
As the water warms up I will share my favorite Gardiner’s Bay beaches to drop anchor and swim to shore!
