ToasT honors an art form of reciting poetry based on characters and situations from the Black Experience, mostly performed in prisons, bars and pool halls. Folklore heroes led by Dolomite come to life in a very real Attica Prison cellblock circa 1971, a turning point in American history.

ToasT is a commission of the Public Theater. Funding for the development of the play is provided by Time Warner Inc. and The MAP Fund. ToasT was developed at the Sundance Institute Theatre Lab and the Sundance Institute Playwrights Retreat at Ucross.
