Winter Weather Advisory For LI Kicks Off Tuesday Night

Long Islanders can expect to see snow, freezing rain, ice and slippery roads Tuesday night, the NWS says.

LONG ISLAND, NY — A winter weather advisory is in effect for Long Island, beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday through 6 a.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Up to an inch of snow is possible, with ice accumulation — specifically, up to a few hundredths of an inch expected, the NWS said.

"Snow and ice covered roads may result in slippery travel conditions," the NWS said.

Residents should slow down and use caution while driving, officials said.

According to Bryan Ramsey, meteorologist with the NWS office in Upton, the weather event will start off with a wintry mix, transitioning into rain.

The northern parts of Long Island will see the most impact, he said, with a "risk of ice" before the snow and ice transitions into freezing rain or drizzle, especially on the North Shore.

Temperatures are expected to hover around freezing into the evening, with lower amounts seen on the North Shore, he said. "The risk is that there could be some freezing contact as the rain and drizzle" falls, he said.

The snow, ice and freezing rain is expected to last until past midnight and taper off around 1 a.m. to 3 a.m., he said.

"It will be quick," Ramsey said.
