Woman, Asleep In Her Long Island Bed, Victim Of 'Violent Attack' By Intruder: Cops

The intruder, enlisted in the Coast Guard, got in through an unlocked door and found the woman asleep in her bed, police say.

MONTAUK, NY — A 22-year-old man who is reportedly enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard was arrested after a "violent attack" on a 67-year-old woman he found sleeping in her bed after he entered her home through an open door, police said.

According to East Hampton Town Police, Matthew Patrick McGee, of Montauk, was arrested on Saturday at 11:45 p.m. and charged with first-degree burglary, third-degree assault, criminal obstruction of breathing and resisting arrest.

McGee, a petty officer with the Coast Guard, according to Newsday, entered the residence of the victim through an unlocked rear door and, while inside, encountered her asleep in her bed, police said.

McGee began physically striking the woman until she managed to escape and request help from another occupant of the home, who dialed 911, police said.

East Hampton Town Police apprehended McGee after forcibly entering the victim's bedroom, where a brief struggle ensued, police said.

Newsday reported that McGee was found asleep in the woman's bed when officers entered the room.

The woman was taken to Southampton Hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.

McGee was held pending a morning arraignment Monday at East Hampton Town Justice Court.

McGee's attorney told Newsday that this client does not remember what happened Saturday night.

“He’s still trying to figure everything out,” Brian DeSesa told the newspaper.
