Young Musicians Perform For Gun Control Awareness

Gun control will be on the agenda at an event next week at Guild Hall.

EAST HAMPTON, NY — Local musicians will band together in East Hampton to raise awareness about gun control.

An event, to be held at Guild Hall in East Hampton on Aug. 9 at 6 p.m., will benefit Moms Demand Action, a charitable wing of the Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, organizers said.

The event will begin Guild Hall's Cheryl and Michael Minikes Garden, with speakers including student activists, local residents, former New York City District Attorney Jackie Hilly, and Paul Guttenberg, whose niece was a victim of the shooting in Parkland, FL, a release said.

Next, at 8 p.m., a performance will take place the John Drew Theater with local bands The Sectionals, Big Karma, and Earthreal.

During the concert, a voter registration booth will be set up in an effort to promote participation in the midterm elections, and all proceeds from the fundraiser will go directly to Moms Demand Action, the night's beneficiary, event organizers said. In addition, the entire evening will be filmed as a documentary by Oscar Award-winning filmmaker Nigel Noble for future use and continued gun sense awareness.

Artist Eileen Boxer will exhibit a single work from her activist art project, Report US, in the lobby. The artwork consists of a large volume hand-bound book with red end papers that leave residual red dye on the readers' hands. Each volume contains excerpts from reports on gun violence that amount to over 1,000 incidents per week in the United States, organizers said.

“Retrieving the massive raw data on gun violence accounts occurring daily in the U.S. and editing the material into concise narratives, I developed a multifaceted art project that aims to engage viewers on a more personal level in ongoing debates about the gun-violence epidemic in this country,” Boxer said.

Moms Demand Action was founded by stay-at-home mom Shannon Watts on December 15, 2012, in response to the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Tickets cost $15 to $40, or $13 to $38 for members, and can be purchased at the box office, by calling 631-324-4050 or Theatermania.com at 1-866-811-4111.
