Young Scientists Explore New Horizons

Third graders in Sag Harbor whet their appetites for science and exploration, educators said.

SAG HARBOR, NY — Young scientists in Sag Harbor expanded their horizons recently.

Sag Harbor Elementary School third-graders in Christopher Martin’s class explored a variety of scientific topics as part of their curriculum, the district said.

In recent weeks, they learned about states of matter in the school’s science lab by researching plasma and the elements necessary to create it. Students’ curiosity was piqued by forming hypotheses and watching simple experiments in electromagnetism and fluid viscosity, the district said.

Also, the kids kicked off a new unit on simple machines where they are learning about inclined planes and have constructed an elaborate marble run.

“For the marble run project, the students succeeded as builders, evidence-based thinkers and artists,” Martin said. “Their appetite for science and experimentation continues to gain momentum in the classroom.”
