#87- Relax Your Body and Mind in East Meadow

Tone up both physically and spiritually.

Busy days full of stock markets, lesson plans and trips on the Long Island Railroad necessitate some rest and relaxation at the end. However, how often does “planning downtime” become both an oxymoron, as well as a stressful task in and of itself? You want to hurry over to the gym for an hour long workout, but you also want to have time to just think, mediate and mentally unwind.

Instead of frantically trying to squeeze a plethora of extracurricular events into every single evening, allow a class at the to combine both physical and mental respite practices for a full body retreat.

Downward facing dogs might seem like an overwhelming position to leap into, especially for a first timer. Luckily, the regular Dahn Yoga classes are geared for all populations of learners-from those individuals stepping into a yoga session for the very first time to the seasoned professionals who attend multiple classes per week.

Sessions are comprised of three elements: warm up, principal exercises and meditation and cool down. Before engaging in the traditional yoga poses, participants find the core of their body’s energy and unleash that source into the rest of the limbs to increase circulation and prepare for the heart of the class. Poses focused on stretching and breathing help to utilize that energy in the most beneficial ways.

For the mental component of Dahn Yoga’s classes, members of the group will be asked to draw themselves away from their worldly concerns, anxieties of the day and plans for later, and to instead focus on the movement and rhythm of their own bodies. Through this series of physical exercise and mental practices and developments, sources, forces and purposes of energy in the body are invigorated and restored.

While yoga is a much like a comprehensive treatment for the body, the practice is not for everyone. In that case, consider one of Dahn Yoga’s other classes. Tai-Chi, Ki Gong (energy martial arts) and VIB, a class involved in releasing energy from the body are offered.

Class times vary, but the center is generally open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mon-Fri and 8 a.m. to 1:00pm on Saturdays. As of spring, an individual introductory session costs $25. Consider purchasing a regular membership for $180, which allows you to participate in an unlimited amount of classes.
