Barbara Lopez-Heffer Named Director of Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner Program at NUMC

Barbara Lopez-Heffernan, NP, has been named the director of the Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) program at Nassau University Medical Center’s Emergency Department, according to a press release from the hospital. The SAFE program is certified by the Department of Health and offers 24-hour services.
“I am pleased that Ms. Lopez-Heffernan has accepted the position as director of NUMC’s SAFE program where she will work very closely with the Nassau County Police Department, the District Attorney’s office and the Coalition against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, in ensuring that victims of sexual assault are served competently, discreetly, and with compassion,” said NUMC President and CEO Arthur Gianelli in the press release. “Her extensive background and experience make her the right choice to further NUMC’s commitment to serving sexual assault victims and providing them needed services with compassionate care and in a prompt manner.”
A forensic nurse since 1993, Lopez-Heffernan also worked as a sexual assault nurse at North Shore University Hospital for seven years. She has her master’s degree from Molloy College and is fluent in Spanish – a vital asset at NUMC.
