WESTBURY, NY — A couple from Brooklyn assaulted Nassau County police officers while they were trying to arrest them Saturday night.

According to Nassau police, officers were called to Carle Road and Jericho Turnpike in Westbury just before midnight for reports of a woman yelling and banging on the front doors of several homes in the area. When officers arrived, police say they found Courtney Stapleford, 28, of Madison Street, Brooklyn, sitting in a 2019 orange Subaru CTK with Travis Watkins, 29, of the same address in Brooklyn.

Police say the officers saw that Stapleford was upset and that Watkins had a bruise on the left side of his forehead. While the officers were investigating, police say Stapleford became verbally combative and quickly exited the car, pushing back the officer talking to her and attempting to hit him.

Police say the offices tried to handcuff Stapleford, but she physically resisted and kicked an officer several times before she was placed under arrest.

After she was handcuffed, police say Watkins got out of the car and began to shout at the officers, demanding they release Stapleford. Police say he refused to step back, despite several orders from the officers to do so. When officers tried to arrest him, police say he resisted as well, injuring an officer's hand in the process. The officer was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
