East Meadow High School Goes Mobile

Application helps students make the transition into a new school year.

For Christian Turkoanje, using the computer has felt natural since he was a kid.

Now, Turkoanje, 18, has created a phone application to make the students and parents of lives a little bit easier.

The application, which is available for both the iPhone and Android users, combines the essentials all into one place. Whether you are looking for the bell schedule, school map, important forms, or contact information, the application has you covered. It also offers the ability to be alerted for school closures.

“I started playing around with a software development kit that apple provides you,” Turkoanje, a 2011 graduate of East Meadow High School, said. “I actually developed three other applications to get them out there and see how the application store works.”

The other applications were all different versions of  “Safe Browse,” which allows users to navigate the internet without having to worry about their history being saved.

Turkoanje got the idea to develop the East Meadow High School application last year, but he had since fine-tuned it as part of his senior project this past May.

“Why not build an application that helps students?” Turkoanje asked. “I know it’s confusing with all of the new changes each year.”

Turkoanje is currently enrolled in the computer science program at Stonybrook University, although he’s not sure where he wants to take his computer skills in the future.

One thing is for sure. Another update is in store for the East Meadow High School application, and, although users will have to wait until next May to see it, Turkoanje promised that there will be “a ton of new features” to enjoy.

The application currently has more than 500 users on the iPhone alone, and, while it appears easy and simple to use for the user, it wasn’t such an easy task to develop.

“All websites are coded in HTML,” Turkoanje said. “There are other computer languages. When you’re working on an application by yourself, it's difficult working on multiple platforms at the same time. “

Are you a user of the East Meadow High School application on the iPhone or Android? What do you think?
