Town of North Hempstead Illuminated Town Hall Purple in Recognition of Purple Day

Partnership with EPIC Family of Human Service Agencies Highlights Ongoing Commitment to Epilepsy Awareness and Training

The Town of North Hempstead, in partnership with the EPIC Family of Human Service Agencies, including the Epilepsy Foundation Long Island, recognized Purple Day, a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness of epilepsy and supporting individuals living with seizure disorders.In honor of Purple Day, the Town illuminated Town Hall in purple reaffirming its commitment to education, awareness, and inclusion for those affected by epilepsy.

“Purple Day is a powerful reminder that awareness and education can save lives and build more inclusive communities,” said Supervisor Jennifer DeSena. “Our partnership with EPIC and the Epilepsy Foundation Long Island reflects our commitment to ensuring that our public safety personnel and staff are equipped with the knowledge and compassion needed to support residents living with epilepsy. By lighting Town Hall in purple, we stand in solidarity with those Long Islanders impacted by epilepsy each and every day.”

Purple Day serves as an opportunity to bring visibility to epilepsy, a neurological condition that affects more than 35,000 Long Islanders and nearly one in ten individuals over the course of their lifetime. Through this recognition, the Town aims to foster understanding, reduce stigma, and highlight the importance of preparedness in responding to seizures.

“EPIC is proud to partner with the Town of North Hempstead in advancing epilepsy awareness and equipping those on the front lines with life-saving knowledge,” said Lisa Burch, President/CEO of EPIC Family of Human Service Agencies. “Through training, education, and community outreach, we are working together to ensure that individuals living with epilepsy are understood, supported, and safe. Purple Day is a meaningful opportunity to shine a light on this important work and continue building a more informed and compassionate community.”

The Town’s collaboration with EPIC has led to the implementation of specialized epilepsy training programs for lifeguards and other Town staff. Delivered by the Epilepsy Foundation Long Island, the certified training provides critical instruction in seizure recognition, emergency response protocols, and best practices for interacting with individuals experiencing seizures.

These efforts go beyond basic first aid, empowering front-line personnel with the tools necessary to respond effectively and compassionately in emergency situations, while helping to create safer, more inclusive public spaces.By recognizing Purple Day and continuing its partnership with EPIC, the Town of North Hempstead is setting a strong example of municipal leadership—prioritizing health, safety, and inclusion for all residents.
