Great Escape: 'An Afternoon Delight'

Discuss a novel while enjoying your lunch at the East Meadow Library.

With the beautiful 70 degree weather that graced the island with its presence only a week ago, you have probably spent the last week pulling out the family’s t-shirts, summer dresses and flip flops from the closest corners and storage bins they have been hibernating in since winter arrived full force during the holiday season.

Unfortunately, it seems as though all of your efforts have been for naught. In addition to bulging closets and currently unusable sandals strewn about the house, you also have children carrying on about how they just want to go outside and play, wish summer would come so school would be over and an array of other melodramatic crises.

A truly relaxing activity is, without a doubt, the remedy at this point and time. From time to time on durin the afternoon, the offers a program entitled “Lunch ‘n Books.” They provide the beverages (coffee and tea for a refill on your morning jolt of caffeine to be exact!), and you provide the witty, intelligent, and crafty insight on the book that the session is dedicated to. This event will be hosted on Monday, March 28 at 12:30PM, and the novel up for discussion will be Colum McCann’s Let the Great World Spin.

Travel back to the 1970s for artistically crafted glimpses of New York City at that time, and follow Corrigan, an Irish monk, along with other characters on their own journeys and explorations of the Big Apple. Coming to the library program will enhance your understanding of the novel, as other readers share their perspectives, insights and analysis of the work.

Even if you work during the majority of the day, this opportunity is an excellent one for your lunch hour, as participants are welcomed to bring their own midday meal along with them.

One of the best parts of this whole experience? While you're curled up with a cup of hot cocoa and reading McCann’s novel over the weekend, you can tell the kids that you need some quiet time to do your “homework”!
