Make a Statement: Fall 2014 Jewelry Trends

Make a Statement: Fall 2014 Jewelry Trends

The temperature is dropping, but the runways in Paris, New York, and London are hot with fall fashions. Here’s a rundown of the latest jewelry looks being seen on the runways and red carpets around the world, according to jckonline.com, Fall Tales: Fashion and Jewelry Trends Retailers Need to Know Now.

1. Big and cozy

If there’s a buzzword for this fall, it’s “cozy.” According to fashion reports, the runways are teeming with big and plush outerwear, from puffy parkas to fur baseball caps. What does that mean for fall jewelry? Look for pieces big enough to wear over extra-long sleeves, and collar necklaces over turtlenecks.

2. Large still in charge

During the collections, large was still in charge door knocker-size pendants, stacked silver cuffs climbing up the arm, oversized hoop earrings, and for the flower lovers, large and ornate botanical brooches spilling down the shoulders.

3. Eccentric is in

Like your jewelry a bit unusual? You’re in good company as the jewelry on display at the fall fashion shows raised some eyebrows with a parade of eccentric and experimental styles. Consider the one-earring look, multi-finger rings, rings attached to bracelets, and hand jewelry — part glove, part bauble.

4. Ageless animal style

Animal motifs have been popular in jewelry for ages, and the trend continues this fall. Models on runways displayed all sorts of animal-shaped finery, such as the charming frog brooches and butterfly necklaces. Personalize the idea by wearing a pattern of an animal you identify with — your own personal sigil.

5. Understated is always popular

If you’re the more classic and conservative type, you’re also in vogue as designers also displayed very understated, minimalist styles. Seen under the runway lights were beautiful wire-thin necklaces with single pearl accents, as well as lovely charm necklaces. Delicate, small, and simple designs are where trends are heading.

6. Do it yourself

Another big runway trend this fall is the handcrafted, DIY look. Several designers showed artisanal pieces, such as jewelry with hand-painted details and beaded safety pins instead of buttons. If you like homespun style, look for statement earrings crafted from a variety of everyday objects. Anything that has the style and charm of being handmade is in.

7. Ok to mix metals

On the opposite side of the homespun scale is the burgeoning metal jewelry trend. If space age speaks to you, look for sleek and futuristic-looking pieces. Don’t be afraid to mix metals — a hot trend continuing from summer is metal-mixing — pairing burnished gunmetal with bright yellow gold, pale rose gold with oxidized silver, or rhodium with copper. Stack those bangles, layer neck chains, and dangle multiple metals from the same earrings.
