Man Gets 20 Years To Life For 2020 Burglaries On Long Island: DA

The man broke into a boarding house on two separate occasions, stealing two electric bicycles, Nassau DA Anne Donnelly said.

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — A Manhattan man was sentenced Wednesday to 20 years to life in prison for two burglaries he committed seven days apart at a Uniondale boarding house in 2020, Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly announced Thursday.

Kevin Carroll, 41, was convicted on Dec. 14 of one count of first-degree burglary, three counts of second-degree burglary, and two counts of third-degree burglary.

The trial began on Dec. 6, and the jury deliberated for approximately two days before giving their verdict.

Carroll is a mandatory persistent felony offender, Donnelly said.

"The defendant once lived at the boarding house at 429 Fenimore Avenue and knew the layout, the people that lived there, and where they kept their valuables," Donnelly said in a news release. "Carroll broke into the house, attacked a victim, and stole an electric bicycle. Just seven days later, the defendant went back for more, forcing his way back into the address and stealing a second electrical bike. Kevin Carroll is a persistent felony offender with a lengthy criminal record. He will now potentially serve the rest of his life in prison and will no longer be a threat to the community."

The boarding house has shared single-occupancy rooms, the DA said.

On June 22, 2020, around 5 p.m., Carroll forced open a back door of the house and struck a victim, who had gone to investigate the disturbance, several times in the face and head, prosecutors said. The victim ran outside to call 911 and saw Carroll fleeing with a gray electric bicycle that belonged to another resident of the house, investigators said.

On June 29, 2020, around 1:30 p.m., another victim heard a knock at the front door, opened the door and saw Carroll standing there, officials said. The victim tried to hold the door closed, but Carroll pushed through and entered the house, prosecutors said. Carroll entered another room, walked out with a white electric bicycle, and fled, officials said.

Twenty minutes later, police officers saw Carroll with the white bicycle approximately a quarter of a mile from the home, authorities said. He was arrested later that day by Nassau County Police Department officers, police said.

Carroll was acquitted of one count each of second-degree burglary and third-degree burglary, two counts of first-degree criminal contempt and three counts of second-degree criminal contempt.
