Patch spoke to owner and Long Island native Roberta Perry to ask her about the business:
Patch: How did you get your first start in this business?

Perry: In 2005, after years of my skin being dry, itchy and irritated, I finally realized that taking care of my skin and myself was important. I discovered exfoliating products, but like the proverbial Goldilocks, none were completely satisfying my needs and wants. I headed for the kitchen and played like a “mad chemist” to create my own. With lots of research and trial and error, I mixed up different combinations of botanical oils and came up with a winner. I brought in my sister, who has since passed, and we started ScrubzBody™, in 2006, in my home.
The business quickly moved to a renovated garage and then to a small manufacturing/store front, in Bethpage, NY in 2011. We moved to a larger space in 2014, still in Bethpage. We are thrilled to now be opening in larger space in the thriving town of Farmingdale, at 245 Main Street! After all these years, we are proud of the fact that our products are still handcrafted with love in small batches. We host Make Your Own ScrubzBody Scrub parties for kids of all ages. We sell retail, private label and wholesale. We donate to 6 charities, on a regular basis, with different scents of our products that give back.
Patch: Is this your first business venture? What other projects have you worked on?
Perry: I had other businesses before. I freelanced as a graphic designer and telecom sales person, but ScrubzBody has taken all the best of every business I worked on and wrapped it around a product line I am forever humbled by and proud of.
Patch: What’s the best business advice you’ve ever received?
Perry: Be grateful and be authentic. It never fails.
Patch: How long have you lived or done business here?
Perry: Our grand opening is on November 17th, 2017 and we plan on being here a very long time!

Patch: What’s your favorite part about being a business in Farmingdale What makes Farmingdale special?
Perry: We LOVE the feeling and the vibe of the town. I am a lifelong Nassau resident, so watching Farmingdale grow into this incredible haven has been incredible.
Patch: Did anyone influence you as a business owner? How?
Perry: I have so many mentors and people who were generous in their time and information. In particular are my late sister Michelle Tucker and my best friend, Wendy Rubin, who has done more for my business than you can imagine. Donna Maria of Indie Business Network and my special group of Indie ladies are fantastic. We have a private Facebook group and share all the time.
Peter Shankman of Shankminds Mastermind Group is another. I love his books and the online group he has created is great. All have given me the chance to learn, grow, share and be a part of a community of like minded, awesome people.
Patch: Did you ever make a business mistake and later on were glad you made it?
Perry: Oh yes! I have made many many mistakes! I truly believe you can't succeed without failure. A business I was a part of in Dallas, TX was the biggest disaster, but it taught me as much what not to do, as what to do when I started ScrubzBody.

Patch: Tell us something about yourself that people may not know.
Perry: I have hiked to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro with my siblings and also hiked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. I have taken hobby lessons and play drums for fun for the past 15 years. I love to roller blade and have hundreds and hundreds of miles under my wheels.
Patch: What advice would you give to a business owner just starting out?
Perry: We would have no business at all without our customers, so I treat each one with that in mind. That is my advice. Give AWESOME customer service and make sure each experience makes that person feel special.
