Blizzard Aftermath Continues in Farmingdale

Blizzard clean-up continued Tuesday in Farmingdale, after the area received more than 18 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

"We're in mop-up mode," said spokeswoman Phyliss Barry.

Mayor George Starkie said crews were out for a full 24 hours between Sunday and Monday before a shift change. "Everywhere in the village has been plowed at least a half dozen times and there is sand and salt down."

Starkie said the next focus will be a coordinated effort between the village and the town to cart the snow off of Main Street and other narrow roads if it doesn't melt.

There are still a handful of Farmingdale residents experiencing power outages, off of Boundary Ave. and north of Conklin St. LIPA is assessing both situations.

Town officials said the full cost of the storm in terms of manpower, overtime and dollars and cents won't be known for several weeks.

reopened Tuesday, but will be closed after 5 p.m., canceling all evening activities.

Meanwhile, the Long Island Rail Road resumed limited service on Tuesday  on the Ronkonkoma Branch. Commuters reported crowded, uncomfortable conditions on the trains this morning.

"The LIRR also expects to be able to gradually resume very limited service on other branches throughout the day," the MTA said in a statement on their website. "Until then, there will continue to be major delays and in some cases suspensions in service across our transportation network that will continue through the afternoon on portions of the Long Island Rail Road and NYC Subway system."
