Defective Fireplace Causes Massapequa House Fire

Three firefighters suffered minor injuries while battling the blaze Sunday morning.

Three firefighters suffered minor injuries while battling a fire at a Massapequa home Sunday morning that was caused by a faulty fireplace, police said.

The fire broke out at a home on Bayview Avenue around 10 a.m. The house was “ fully engulfed with flames” when the Massapequa Fire Department and Seventh Precinct police officers arrived on the scene, police said.

All of the occupants inside the home were able to get out safely.

Forty Massapequa firefighters with four apparatus responded to extinguish the flames, which caused extensive damage to the home, police said. Three firefighters were treated for minor injuries and released at the scene.

The Nassau County Arson/Bomb Squad along with the Nassau County Fire Marshal responded and determined that the fire was accidental and was caused by a defective fireplace, police said.
