Farmingdale Baseball Beats Freeport, Captures First Season Win
Dalers score early and often against Freeport.
The Farmingdale baseball team (1-3) picked up its first win of the season Monday afternoon, defeating Freeport, 15-0.
A week after being swept by Oceanside, the Dalers exploded for 15 runs on 17 hits while Alex Brosnan picked up the win with a dominating performance on the hill.
Brosnan struck out the side in the opening frame and the Dalers proceeded to provide the senior right hander with all the run support he’d need. Matt Oppedisano was promptly awarded first base after being hit by a pitch which set up an Alex Brosnan home run to left centerfield. The Dalers batted around in the first inning, allowing Kornfeld to collect his second hit and third RBI of the inning. Farmingdale scored seven runs on five hits in the first and never looked back from there. Neither did Brosnan.

The hard throwing right hander struck out the first five batters he faced before allowing a double in the second inning. With a man on second, the Dalers defense erased the only threat presented to Brosnan throughout the game. T.R. Waszkiewicz nailed the runner attempting to score on a single from second base at home plate to end the second inning.
Brosnan cruised through six easy innings of work, striking out 10 while scattering six hits with no walks to his credit.

The Dalers were silenced in the second inning before tacking on a run in the third on an Oppedisano single that extended the lead to 8-0. With Brosnan dealing on the mound, the bats continued to supply ample run support highlighted by Kornfeld’s second home run of the day, a three run blast that put Farmingdale up 13-0.
The Dalers would tack on two more runs to secure their first win of the season, 15-0 over Freeport.
Heroes: Kornfeld and Brosnan were among the many standouts in a blowout victory over Freeport. Kornfeld went 3-3 with two home runs and six runs batted in to lead the way for the Dalers on offense. On the mound, Brosnan breezed through six impressive innings of six hit ball to pick up his first win of the season. Matt Oppedisano drove in three runs while going 3-3 on the day to go along with his spectacular throw to home to nail a would be run scored.
Turning Point: Farmingdale set the tone from the opening pitch, getting off to a fast start to blank Freeport. In the first inning, the Dalers sent 11 guys up to bat to score seven runs on five hits while Brosnan struck out the side to begin his day of work. The Dalers jumped to an early lead and never relinquished it with unrelenting offense and spectacular pitching and defense.
Bottom Line: The Dalers seized the momentum early and tore the cover off the ball to win their first game of the season.
Quotables: Following a tough week, Coach Frank Tassielli cited Brosnan’s dominance as one of the key reasons for the win against Freeport.
“Striking out the first five batters is a good way to start the game,” he said. “We’re going to get that almost every time he’s on the mound. Ten strikeouts in six innings helps and puts less pressure on the defense.” Coach Tassielli attributed the victory to the quick start on offense from his team with an overwhelming pitching performance from the staff ace Brosnan.
With the team struggling to score runs last week against Oceanside, Coach Tassielli slotted Kornfeld in the two hole to get something going on offense. The senior rewarded his coach’s decision by slamming two home runs and driving in six runs for the Dalers.
“He had some pretty good at bats last week against Oceanside,” said Tassielli. “You see a pitch you can handle and drive and that’s exactly what he did.”
Farmingdale faces Freeport two more times this week but Tassielli is not overlooking Freeport despite the rout on Monday afternoon.
“We’re taking it one day at a time,” he said. “I’m not going to overlook these guys. Hopefully we can put another win on the board on Wednesday and just go from there.”
Key Stat: Hits. Farmingdale was really locked in as a unit offensively, ripping off 17 hits which equated in 15-0 rout of Freeport. Oppedisano, Kornfeld, Colasurdo and Denis Donovan each had three hits. The top of the Farmingdale lineup went a combined 12-14 while driving in ten of the 15 runs scored against Freeport.
Next Game: Farmingdale plays the second of a three game series on the road against Freeport on April 20.
