Farmingdale Business Owner Competing in Bodybuilding Competition

Clayton Johnson, owner of Monster Nutrition, will participate in the Junior USA competition this weekend.

Fifteen years ago, Clayton Johnson says he never predicted his Farmingdale roots would lead him into national bodybuilding.

Johnson, co-owner of Monster Nutrition, began his career in high school and has since blown up in the world of fitness.

"Training for football in high school was my first introduction to weight training," the said. "I loved it and I just took off. It gave me a big boost of confidence and self esteem, and I couldn't stop."

After placing seventh in the Junior Nationals in Chicago last month, Johnson has been training extensively to prepare for the Junior USA competition this weekend in Las Vegas.

"I have to come in a little bit grainier, a little bit harder and pull the rest of that little bit of water out," he said. "It's one of the biggest amateur shows in the country and the winner turns professional."

Johnson has trained at Infinity Fitness in Farmingdale for several years, and found it to be the perfect space to open his own store, with his business partner and childhood best friend, Darren Anselmo.

"It's what we love to do and we're passionate about it," said Johnson, "and we figured if I'm going for my professional status, I could be a spokesperson for the company as well."

Monster Nutrition, which opened in January, serves as a one-stop shop for all workout necessities including protein powder, vitamins, creatine and state-of-the-art supplements. According to Johnson, Monster Nutrition's stock can suit any and all needs, such as specialty women products or gluten free items.

"Our prices are more competitive than GNC or Vitamin Shoppe, and as far as any consultation you may need, you have professional advice here," Johnson said.

To further expand his reach, Johnson and a team of fitness experts recently launched a website

Johnson will compete this Friday and Saturday at the Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall at the University of Nevada Las Vegas campus.
