Farmingdale High School Students Win Regional Science Bowl

FHS Students Place First Among Long Island High Schools and Secure Participation in Prestigious National Finals

Farmingdale, NY (February 28, 2015) – The Farmingdale School District is proud to announce that five Farmingdale High School students have won the Brookhaven National Laboratory/Long Island Regional High School Science Bowl. The students placed first among 15 other Long Island high school teams. The success of the high school team in the regional competition has earned them an all-expense paid trip to compete against other schools from all over the nation at the Science Bowl National Finals in Washington, D.C. from April 30 to May 4, 2015. The top 16 high school teams and top eight middle school teams at the national finals will receive a $1,000 cash price for their schools’ science departments.

“I am incredibly proud of the commitment and determination of the team to earn such an amazing result against top teams from all over Long Island,” said Farmingdale High School Science Team Coach Peter Macchia. “The students have diligently worked together for the first place accomplishment, and we look forward to making Farmingdale proud at the National Finals in Washington, D.C.”

The National Science Bowl (NSB) is a highly competitive science education and academic event among teams of high school and middle school students who compete in a fast-paced verbal forum to solve technical problems and answer questions in all branches of science and math. Each team is comprises four students, one alternate student and a coach. Regional and national events encourage student involvement in math and science activities of importance to the Department of Energy and the Nation.

“These students are great role models and amazing representatives of the Farmingdale community. Their work ethic and determination is a reflection of our dedicated faculty and staff members who work to provide the best quality education for all our students,” stated Farmingdale High School Principal Glen Zakian.
