Farmingdale Lacrosse Beats Lynbrook, 10-3
Defending-champion Dalers score five goals in four minutes to seal win.
Lynbrook (1-2) was first on the scoreboard, but Farmingdale (1-2) had the last word, beating the Owls, 10-3, in a non-league game on Tuesday at Lynbrook South Middle School.
"We needed it," said Farmingdale coach Bob Hartranft, speaking on the team's first win in three games, despite nearly doubling the shot total of their previous two opponents.
Farmingdale, the defending Nassau County champions and this year's top seed in Conference I, struggled at the beginning of the first quarter, firing a half dozen shots wide of Lynbrook goaltender Ethan Mirenberg. The Owls took advantage of the missed opportunities, with junior attack Anthony Rainone scoring off an assist from senior midfielder Andrew Mehr midway through the first quarter to give Lynbrook a 1-0 lead.
Ironically, Farmingdale's best shot of the quarter came from midfield as time was expiring, when senior midfielder Korey Hendrickson took a desperation rip, beating the clock — and the Lynbrook goaltender — to tie the score at 1.
Turning Point: The Dalers found their game in the second quarter, scoring five goals in the final four minutes to take a commanding 7-1 lead at the half. Hartranft said he was happy to see some of the shots finally find their way to the back of the net.
Quotables: "Don't try and be so fine with the shooting," Hartranft said of his players' missed shots early in the game. "They're trying to put it in under the crossbar … just put it on goal, make 'em make a save."
"We didn't know what we'd be able to do, but we hung with [Farmingdale] for the first quarter, but then it got a little out of control," said Owls coach Bill Leighley.
Heroes: Farmingdale was led by senior attack Sal Tuttle, who had two goals and four assists in the game. Senior midfielder Mike Perettine added two goals, and senior attack Brian Prendergast had a goal and two assists.
Lynbrook is entering this season without its seniors from last year, many of whom helped the lead the team to the semifinals in 2010.
Farmingdale senior goaltender Mike Palmer had four saves; junior Frank Deluca had one save.
Next game: Weather permitting, the Dalers will host Plainview JFK High School Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
